‘Special Scholarship’, What Is It?

In February 2022, the school provided scholarships, named ‘special scholarship’, to some students. Students who were not eligible for the payment were surprised by the sudden scholarship. Is this scholarship different from scholarships given to students who have performed well? Students posted many questions on the community wall, so ‘The Woeseong Times’ conducted an interview with the ‘student welfare team’.

First of all, the ‘special scholarship’ is divided into two parts. The first part is simply when the school provides scholarships to its own to students who did not receive any form of ‘national scholarship’ provided by ‘KOSAF’, the Korea Student Aid Foundation. This was designed for students who could not receive scholarships due to the income quintile. The other part of the scholarship fund is to provide scholarships for those students who very narrowly missed out on receiving a grade-based scholarship. Since there are a limited number of students who can receive grade scholarships, the school decided to provide an extra scholarship for students who missed the opportunity. Since the two types of scholarship are given in the form of tuition reduction, students who take out loans and register must immediately repay the same as other students who have received grade scholarships. As such, the special scholarships given to students at school were paid on behalf of scholarships for overseas activities that could not be used due to ‘COVID-19’.

Song Min-jin, a member of staff in the student welfare team said, “Students are having a lot of difficulties due to ‘COVID-19’. In order to help this situation a little, the school tried to provide as many scholarships as possible to students. Scholarships cannot be paid equally to all students, but we will continue to create these opportunities often in the future.”
