The Pulitzer Prize photo exhibition is being held in Busan. It is being held at the Busan Cultural Center for about four months from January 21 to May 15, 2022. The Pulitzer Prize is the most prestigious award for reporting, literature, and music in the United States. It was created in 1917 with a development fund of $500,000, the legacy of famous journalist Joseph Pulitzer. Every year, a total of 21 people are awarded prizes; 14 in the media sector and seven in the literature, drama, and music sectors. Every April, the Pulitzer Prize Selection Committee at Columbia University announces the winners, and the awards ceremony is held in May. The winners are awarded $10,000 in prize money.
The exhibition of Pulitzer photos was first held in Korea in 1988 and until now there have been a total of four exhibitions attracting approximately 600,000 viewers. They are considered to be the most popular photo exhibitions in Korea. In the 2022 Busan exhibition, approximately 140 prize-winning photos taken between 1942 and the present will be exhibited, and each photo will have a short explanation of the story behind it. In addition, photos taken by ‘Team Reuters’, which included Kim Kyung-hoon, the first Korean to win the Pulitzer Prize, are on display. The photos contain social issues of the time, which attracts viewers’ interest. There are also photos of refugees taken by reporters during the Korean War. Visitor Park Su-jeong said, “The Pulitzer Prize photographs exhibition was a visual treat. Each photo contained the photographer’s thoughts and feelings about that time. I was thankful to all photographers for allowing me to see such great photos. Also, John H. White’s quote, ‘The Pulitzer is the mirror that shows it forever’ was the most impressive part for me.”
Admission to the Pulitzer Prize photo exhibition is 15,000 Won for adults and 12,000 Won for children. Taking photos is prohibited inside the exhibition room, and audio guides are provided for a charge of 3,000 Won. The exhibition is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is closed every Monday.
