Reinforcing Universities’ Fundamentals, It Came To Taw

Reinforcing Universities’ Fundamentals, It Came To Taw

On August 17, The Ministry of Education(MoE) announced the result of Korean universities’ assessments. All 285 universities applied to the assessments. As the result, 52 universities came up short to qualify government’s financial support. Including BUFS, any of the universities in Busan were not listed to those 52 universities. Great efforts from BUFS’ faculty members and staff made this satisfying result. But it is not time to pop the champagne, definitely.

BUFS was not rated phenomenal in most of the assessment sections. The numbers of recruiting freshmen were shocking, especially. Fortunately, MoE reflected that they would relieve the standard considering non-capital located universities are in disadvantages than ones in capital areas. These adjusted rate numbers obviously helped BUFS to maintain financial aid.

MoE informed that they would let the universities determine capacity reduction themselves but will quit aiding if it won't fit qualifications from next year. Yet, MoE announced the standard reduction rate and will be determined in the first half of 2022.   This year, universities suffered a serious freshmen shortage, 40,000 students short to meet the goal in total. 40,000 is about four times more than last year’s deficiency. The statistics showed it was more severe to non-capital or to private universities. BUFS has both two unfavorable conditions. High school graduation numbers are in an apparent downward trend. In this circumstance, it is crucial to keep a constant capacity recruiting rate.

However, this cannot be the only thing for the breakthrough. Delicate approaches from every direction must be followed to improve the respective university’s competency.

A year has passed since BUFS welcomed the new president. Nevertheless, no reorganization plans have been launched for the renovation or improvements. Even new president’s ‘cabinet’ are not fully formed yet. Cooperations between the president and the foundation are vital but it is nowhere to be seen. The foundation must not be the hindrance to make improvements happen.

As we are in a watershed, clear blueprints for recruiting are needed. Whole members should put heads together to reorganize with not degrading our university’s identity. More tasks are heaped. Curriculum developments considering forward finance fluctuations and rearranging credits for graduation must be needed. The reorganization will be rather adequate by centralizing Admission Headquarters which enables all tasks to be done within a linkage to Admission Department.

Renovations should be executed in a particular hurry, but collecting various public opinions must be followed. Reorganizations in upcoming years can make our university fall over a precipice or make us ‘smaller but stronger’ university. Reinforcing fundamental competency, it came to taw.
