What should be done?
“What should be done?” This is a proposition and a question raised in a society facing crisis of V.I. Lenin, who led the October Revolution in Russia in 1917. The current reality of our university makes us reflect on this thesis once again. The depletion of admission students which local small and medium-sized private universities are experiencing, is increasing due to the COVID-19 crisis. What have we done so far despite expecting the grievous situation? It’s too late for regrets or reflecting on oneself. How we must overcome this crisis. It is time to analyze our reality more composedly and practice alternatives.
Our university lacked active response to the total crisis in the field of entrance examination. Due to the university residing on the halo effect of the school’s name, ‘foreign language university', implementation of the omnidirectional university policy in a timely manner was unable. Looking at related indicators including expanses aided for the university, the foundation's insincere school management is at the bottom level. The results of the satisfaction survey of students show the university's educational administration service is the lowest while complaints about scholarship payments are the highest. Considering that the level of full-time faculty remuneration in Busan is also in the lower ranks, there is a loss of motivation to overcome the difficulties.
Every organization requires ‘carrots and sticks' to be mobilized together, to enhance the satisfaction of members and induce loyalty. From this point of view, the university headquarters will have to carry out the following issues all together. First, it is necessary to establish in detail mid to long term promotion and image reinforcement strategies. After properly establishing an identity that fits the direction of foreign language universities, a phased strategy should also be developed. Considering the decline of entrance exam resources every year, various and offensive strategies are mandatory. Recent entrance exam field has showed increase in the tendency to select schools in consideration of all the aspects of the school. It must be kept in mind that enhancing the image and the capability of the organization is the responsibility of its members, and that the future of an organization that does not respect its members is bound to be gloomy.
Universities should be like universities. Let's recognize that the future of our university depends on the will and behavior of our members.
